Study: Summer job market to remain competitive

According to a recent study by Careerbuilder, 21 percent of employers surveyed said that they plan to engage in seasonal employee recruiting, with 57 percent of those indicating that they may consider summer hires for permanent positions.

Competition remains fierce among job candidates, with 47 percent of human resource managers reporting that they often receive more than 50 applications per job opening, and one-third reported regularly getting over 100.

More than half of hiring managers surveyed said that they look for specific, quantified examples of accomplishments when considering applications, and 35 percent cited showing knowledge of the company and interest in long-term positions as positive ways for applicants to set themselves apart. Submitting a cover letter and obtaining a referral from someone within the organization were also recommended.

Additionally, 45 percent reported completing their summer hiring in May and 20 percent said that they hire in June or later, which offers hope to procrastinatory job-hunters.

Some companies are getting more creative with their employee recruitment efforts. In order to ramp up its hiring, McDonald's held its first National Hiring Day last month in a bid to employ 50,000 new workers - approximately four per U.S. restaurant.
