Chipotle in trouble for sketchy employee recruiting

Chipotle restaurants employ an army of burrito makers at thousands of locations throughout the country. However, the chain now finds itself in hot water thanks to allegedly questionable employee recruiting and hiring practices. According to The Wall Street Journal, Immigration and Customs Enforcement has charged the company with hiring hundreds of improperly documented workers at locations in Minnesota.

The allegations forced the company to layoff hundreds of workers throughout the state, but that is not enough for ICE. The WSJ reports that Chipotle will be subject to a complete audit of all I-9 forms. Currently, the chain employees more than 25,000 people at approximately 1,100 locations.

Chipotle spokesman Chris Arnold told the WSJ that the chain mandates prospective employees show two forms of legal documentation prior to employment, but that the company will not stand in the way of ICE's audit request.

The problem is not just limited to the Land of 10,000 Lakes. According to MSNBC, ICE officials say Chipotle's problem expands to Washington, D.C. and Virginia locations. The news has been a serious public relations hit for the fast food giant, which has expansion plans calling for up to 145 new locations in 2011.
