Statewide paid vacation requirement considered in Wash.

A proposal for mandatory paid vacation that would apply to many workers in Washington is being considered by the state legislature in Olympia.

The measure, currently being debated in the state's House of Representatives, provides a week of paid time off per year for all employees with six months or more of tenure, working more than 20 hours per week for businesses that have at least 25 people on staff, according to local news source the Spokesman-Review. The vacation requirement would be the first such statute in the nation.

Area public radio station KPLU points out that the U.S. is the only industrialized country that doesn't have a requirement for employees meeting a certain hours-per-week threshold to be given paid leave. Business organizations are disputing the proposal, pointing out relatively recent legislation that has placed a larger burden on employers, like the possibility of the state instituting paid sick leave and the Wash. minimum wage, which is the highest state-level base pay rate in the country.
