Wisconsin state worker attendance to be closely monitored

Wisconsin officials are pushing back against the increasing number of public employees leaving their jobs behind to protest Governor Scott Walker's plan to increase financial requirements among state workers.

According to the Isthmus Daily Page, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has been told to maintain a strict count of public employee attendance, while ongoing protests bring public schools and services to a halt.

The paper reports that both the governor and the DNR want a "strict count" of exactly who is not showing up for work. Carrie Mickelson, HR director of the DNR, tried to downplay the decision as one that is not targeting employees.

"It's not so much taking attendance of employees, but rather dealing with an issue where some priority issues need to be involved," Mickelson told the news source. "If somebody doesn't report to work, we need to make sure somebody else can handle those responsibilities. It's more about our redirecting our efforts."

Over the last few days, protests have increased in Madison - the state's capital - and other Wisconsin cities to rebuke Walker's call to limit collective bargaining rights among unionized public employees in an effort to decrease the state's $137 million deficit.
