Providence fires its entire teaching force

Teachers in Providence, Rhode Island, did not receive the opportunity to fight for their jobs, after a decision from the superintendent's office dismissed all of the city's teachers on Thursday, WPRI-TV reports. Providence superintendent Tom Brady notified the teachers that all 1,926 would be out of a job by the end of winter's quarter.

As expected, the decision received sharp condemnation from the teacher's union, which stated that not only was the decision harsh and excessive, but that it put the education of thousands of students at risk. Brady stated in a letter to the city's school districts that the decision was made to cut into Providence's $40 million deficit.

"Spending reductions will be part of Mayor Angel Taveras’ effort to restore fiscal stability and put Providence back on firm financial footing. It is inevitable that some portion of these cuts will come from the school budget," read a statement from the mayor's office.

Brady said that decision was well within legal boundaries as the notification was issued prior to March 1, when teachers must be alerted of their employment status.
