New York City comptroller lands huge overtime sum for workers

Construction workers fighting to collect owed overtime pay will finally get their share, thanks to the efforts of New York City comptroller John Liu. The New York Daily News reports that 24 workers for Paramount, a construction company operating in Manhattan, will receive approximately $100,000 each in back pay. The payments come after Liu says they were denied overtime and weekend compensation.

The workers' union became suspicious of missing payments related to debris clean up from sewage system repairs. The Operating Engineers Local 15 reached out to the controller's office to notify Liu that the math simply did not add up.

"We will not tolerate contractors who seek to avoid the responsibility of paying their employees what they are rightfully owed," Liu said in a statement, according to the Daily News.

Paramount finally acknowledged the missing payments and agreed to issue more than $2.3 million in restitution, plus approximately $117,000 in fines to the government. The company has held significant business with the city's Department of Environmental Protection, totaling more than $27 million in contracts.
