New Jersey governor cleans up scandal-laden commission

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has built his reputation upon cost-saving measures and other budgetary constraints. In another act following that mantra, Christie fired more than 70 employees of the Passaic Valley Sewage Commission which was reportedly strife with corruption, the New Jersey Star-Ledger reports.

Sending a message to other wasteful state entities, Christie slashed approximately 12 percent of the PVSC's payroll, including freezing any assets that would go toward outside counsel. Additionally, the governor reaffirmed his support for veto power against any state agency, including the PVSC, that have been accused of unsavory behavior.

"Instead of taking steps to reform the commission, the members of the board who we terminated over a week ago repeatedly engaged in a pattern of abuse," Christie stated in a press conference, according to the paper.

The Star-Ledger reports that the dismissals plus other terminations and budget cuts will save more than $10 million in state salaries. Additionally, the cuts could save residents more than $1.3 million in property taxes in 48 communities throughout Bergen, Passaic, Hudson and Essex counties which received service from the PVSC.
