Military base has financial benefits for New York community

A military base in Upstate New York is responsible for the economic well being of the region, according to the Watertown Daily Times. Fort Drum, which supports more than 19,000 soldiers and 5,000 civilian workers, generated more than $1.5 billion in economic activity for Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties in 2010.

Last year was also the first time that the cumulative payroll of the base exceeded $1 billion, meaning Fort Drum is now the largest employer in that part of the state. Last year, Fort Drum Mountain Community Homes engaged in a partnership with Actus Lend Lease that led to $85.8 million in housing and educational infrastructure construction, a vital decision for the region says one official.

"That translates into an excellent standard of care and access to New York State's exceptional educational system," garrison commander Col. Noel T. Nicolle said in a release. "It's a win-win."

Additionally, local schools received $18 million in federal funding due to the loss of traditional revenue generation because of the large federal presence in the area, WCAX-TV reports.
