Embezzlement uncovered at Boston neighborhood health center

A former payroll consultant for the Harvard Street Neighborhood Health Center in Dorchester, Massachusetts, was recently indicted for allegedly manipulating the center's records in order to conceal his embezzlement of approximately $750,000 over a period of six years, according to the Boston Globe.

A grand jury indicted Nzeribe McKenzie on five counts of larceny over $250 by continuous scheme and 13 counts of making false entries on corporate books.

"Mr. McKenzie used his position to fund his own lavish lifestyle," said Jake Wark, spokesman for District Attorney Daniel F. Conley, according to the news source. "At a time when the center was on the verge of financial collapse, the defendant was driving sports cars and living in a penthouse apartment."

The health center, which has a history of financial mismanagement, almost had to file for bankruptcy three years ago.

According to a 2010 report by the National White Collar Crime Center, employee theft and embezzlement costs businesses and organizations an estimated $400 billion per year.
