City workers' overtime fraud uncovered in Virginia

Nine city workers in Richmond, Virginia, have been charged with fraudulently claiming overtime pay as part of an ongoing investigation.

A recent audit, which included surveillance from October 2010 to March of this year, found that 11 Department of Public Works and Department of Public Utilities employees - including two supervisors - overstated the hours they had worked by 50 percent. This resulted in the workers receiving $12,776 in unearned overtime pay. Three were arrested on felony charges and another six were arrested on misdemeanor charges.

According to the Richmond Times-Dispatch, the investigation was launched after the inspector general's office received complaints about employees abusing time. City auditor Umesh V. Dalal found that within the Department of Public Utlities, "management routinely approved all overtime reports without questioning the validity of the information presented. They also indicated that overtime has been abused by many employees ... for several years and is a common practice."

An overtime dispute of a different kind recently erupted in the state when 71 law enforcement officers in Chesterfield County filed a lawsuit alleging they were not properly compensated for overtime hours, according to the Chesterfield Observer.
