Alabama police officers accused of double dipping on city's payroll

An internal investigation of the Mobile Police Department (MPD) in Mobile, Alabama, found that several of its officers were allegedly double dipping - working side jobs while on the city's payroll - and one was triple dipping, according to the Lagniappe Mobile.

In addition to moonlighting, Lieutenant Mark Bailey allegedly ordered two of his subordinates to work side jobs and then collected the money for himself.

"The officers knew what they were doing was wrong, that it was improper and yet they failed to notify internal affairs and they failed to notify other supervisors," police chief Michael Williams told the news source.

According to Williams, Bailey spent more than half of his shifts at home, and also worked security at sporting events, stores and a local high school when he was supposed to be on duty.

Bailey recently resigned, and the two subordinates - Matthew Christian and Robert Harris - are awaiting trial.

Another officer, Rashaud Grayson, recently served a month's suspension after a December 2010 investigation found that he had left a shift early to work a security job while still on the MPD timeclock, according to WKRG News.
